How to Make the Most of Online Therapy

Therapy can transform your life, and research shows that when participating in therapy online the efficacy is equal to when you’re coming into the office. One of the greatest advantages to online therapy is that it makes meeting your mental health and personal growth goals convenient, accessible and flexible. Baldwin Therapy Group proudly reaches clients online in all of North Carolina and Texas.

To ensure you maximize your experience and truly get the most out of therapy, here are some helpful hints to get you set up for success.

Privacy, Please.

  1. Ensure you have a private, quiet space where you can speak freely without any concern of being overheard. Self-disclosure and confidentiality is crucial to effective therapy, so your environment will need to promote that.

Good Tech.

2. Use a screen that will give you the best user experience possible, like a desktop or laptop computer. In a pinch, a tablet or even a cell phone will do (the beauty of online therapy is that it allows for flexibility and troubleshooting when needed!). However, smaller screens aren’t recommended. Check before your session starts to ensure your location provides strong internet connection.

Get Comfy.

3. Bring in the comforts you need; your cup of coffee or water, a blanket, your journal or notes from the previous session, etc. This is your time, set aside just for you. Make it intentional. Many clients will create a space separate from their work area for therapy sessions to help shift gears during their day. Stepping into a different “zone” in your home or office will help you mentally and emotionally adjust to the setting of your therapy session (and vice versa when you need to return to the rest of your day).

Reflect.

4. Give yourself the opportunity to journal or even jot a few words in the “notes” section of your phone to capture the work you're doing, progress made, and insights you’re gaining. This can also help when experiences, thoughts, or questions arise during the week that you want to come back to at your next session. Your therapist delights in recapping your reflections, observations and take-aways, so be sure to share this!
